He cost a hell of a lot of money but Belgian striker, Christian Benteke, gave Liverpool fans a glimpse of what could be in store after hitting a screaming volley in a 2-1 pre-season win over Swindon Town.
Liverpool huffed and puffed their way through the 90 mins of their final hit out before the start of the EPL season. With Benteke, and the clubs other marquee signing Firminio, getting an opportunity to pull on a red shirt for the first time. The performance wasn't as fluent as many would have hoped for. A host of chances were missed and It took a fortunate strike from youngster Sheyi Ojo to seal the win.
The one bright spot for the reds though must have been the performance of Benteke. The 24 year old has been signed to score the goals that were so soundly missed from last season's campaign and he set the scene for the up coming season three minutes in to the second half with this stunning effort.
It was a goal the seemed to spur the 32 million GBP man in to life and he nearly grabbed a second soon after but scooped his chance over the bar before hitting the net again only to be ruled offside.
His performance has impressed his new Liverpool team mates, in particular Kolo Toure who says he will now be able to sleep soundly at night knowing he only has to mark the Belgian in training.
"To score on your debut, and what a great goal it was, will give Christian the confidence to have a great season.Bring on Stoke City.
"It was his first game for quite a while and was really important for him to score a fantastic goal.
"It is always difficult playing against a striker like him because he is really strong, can hold the ball up, set up other players and score.
"I am definitely happier to have him on my side than to have to go against him."
